Abstract
This paper presents the results of an investigation into the dynamic characteristics of wheeled vehicles on sand. First, the mechanical properties of sand are determined by the dynamic triaxial test equipment. The influence of grains size, bulk density, moisture content and vibration on its bearing capacity is studied. Based on these results and the dynamic characteristics of tire, the dynamic characteristics of vehicle-wheel-sand system are analysed. Then, the mechanism of dynamic sinkage on sand is explained. Finally, the way to improve the trafficability of wheeled vehicles on sand is discussed. Suitable forms of the wheel which can improve the trafficability of vehicles on sand are analysed by the theory of plasticity as well as using the test results.
