Abstract

Neutron activation analysis, FTIR and thermal analysis show that bromine on the surface of PE single crystals can be replaced by toluene by means of Friedel-Crafts reaction. Infrared analysis of the substituted (FC) crystals also shows that the majority of addition occurs by 1,3 and 1,4 substitution to the aromatic ring. The presence of bulky groups on the surface (Br or FC) inhibits any reorganization annealing by the crystals.
