Abstract

The success and challenges for ultrasonic testing in NDT and SHM are discussed. The semi-analytical finite element method (SAFEM) is part of a recently developed computationally efficient hybrid analytical finite element computation method, on numerical methods. An image reconstruction process takes place to produce an image in the interest zone that would lead to such an ensemble of waveforms at each receiving sensor. A novel ultrasonic guided wave modal analysis technique is being studied to bridge the gap between ultrasonic transient wave analysis and longtime steady-state vibration modal analyses. Many of the challenges are focused on technology transfer of work tasks to a realistic practical environment. The list of successes and challenges presented has provided a starting point for a complete evaluation of the state of ultrasonic guided wave testing.
