Abstract
A parallel increase of obesity and chronic partial sleep loss prevalence has been observed in modern societies. In addition to this parallelism, both phenomena seem to have some causal link. Several epidemiological surveys, together with some experimental studies in normal subjects, support the notion of this causal relationship. Chronic partial sleep loss can be equated with an allostatic load situation contributing, through its autonomic and endocrine correlates, to the development of the metabolic syndrome, a condition that is related to chronic stress. In addition, the obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome is considered a manifestation of the metabolic syndrome. The most pertinent literature relating sleep, stress, obesity and the metabolic syndrome is reviewed in this article.
