Abstract

A discussion on principle and advantages of different approaches to deep desulfurization of hydrocarbon fuels (gasoline, diesel fuel, and jet fuels), presented at the 3rd Topical Conference on Fuel Cell Technology at the 2004 AIChE National Spring Meeting (New Orleans, LA 4/25-29/2004), covers the removal of organic sulfur compounds from hydrocarbon fuels; a new approach on sulfur-selective adsorption of organic sulfur compounds for deep desulfurization at ambient temperature without using hydrogen for ultra-clean fuels and fuel cells; adsorptive desulfurization of both model fuels and real liquid hydrocarbon fuels in a fixed-bed adsorption device; effects of the coexisting olefin and aromatics and the operating conditions on adsorptive performance; adsorptive mechanism and adsorptive selectivity on the basis of both the experimental data and computational results; and examples regarding the different mechanistic pathways for adsorption desulfurization of different sulfur compounds.
