Abstract
Dr. Archie Brain’s invention of the laryngeal mask airway is one of the most important and revolutionary advancements in airway management—even more remarkable when one considers it occurred just at the end of the last century. In this chapter, we aim to outline the important design, efficacy, and safety features of supraglottic airways, highlighting fundamental skills for optimal use and limitations. Current clinical controversies are explored, and a structure to rationalize the use of particular devices for an expanding range of advanced indications is provided.
