Abstract

Epitaxial single-domain smooth Ni films were MBE grown on MgO substrates in both (001) and (111) orientations. It was evident that annealing has a significant effect on the surface and magnetic properties of Ni films on MgO(001). STM imaging of the (001) annealed Ni surface indicated periodic surface nano-patterning. The magnetic anisotropy of the films was also affected by the annealing.
