Abstract
Sustainable adhesive development involves the design of adhesive products and processes that reduce the use or generation of hazardous substances and decrease product environmental impact and energy consumption. Sustainable adhesives can be broadly categorized across their life cycle, including their design, manufacture, use, and ultimate disposal. Therefore, it is essential to conduct comprehensive assessments such as ecological, social, and economic assessments to ensure any new chemistry or products are truly "green." This chapter will focus on adhesives that enable or contribute to sustainability throughout their life cycle. Specifically, we will discuss materials for biodegradable, compostable, recyclable adhesives, and self-healing adhesives.
