Abstract
China's rapid economic growth has created a huge demand for road transportation. China has adopted a mixed portfolio of transportation options including cars, motorcycles, hybrid vehicles, bus rapid transit systems, maglev and bicycles, but with an emphasis on motorised vehicles. It is building the infrastructure for these vehicles to operate effectively. This paper examines the environmental problems caused by this transportation system. It reviews China's transportation strategies and makes suggestions for making them more ecologically sustainable.
