Abstract
The skills of analytical thinking is highly valuable for many professionals who need to form judgment from complex and incomplete data. This essay is a reflection of my experience with teaching visual analytic methods for thinking with data. Visual analytics is about the development and use of interactive visual representations and processing tools to explore patterns and processes from data. The presented approach has been refined through multiple redesigns and is proven to be workable. The question of how to balance the need of learning tools and the structured method in actual course offerings remains to be answered through more experiments.
