Abstract

Acoustic testing of the Teal Ruby Experiment/P80-1 spacecraft revealed vibration of the shunt regulator access panel which exceeded the levels allowed by the component specification. Guided by experience, a novel constrained-layer viscoelastic damping treatment was defined to reduce vibration in the first panel mode (120 hz), the source of the problem. The solution differed from the conventional constrained-layer treatment in that the waffled-rib panel construction allowed the viscoelastic damping material to be attached to ribs and oriented in a direction normal to the plane of the panel rather than parallel.
