Abstract

This chapter describes how principles of supramolecular chemistry based on the use of small-molecule and metal-organic templates can be used to direct intermolecular [2+2] photodimerizations in the organic solid state. The approach provides a general means to gain control of reactivity so as to provide access to molecules difficult to achieve in solution stereospecifically, in quantitative yield, and in gram amounts.
