Abstract
A process to produce [001] textured sodium bismuth titanate (NBT)-barium titanate (Na1/2Bi1/2TiO3-5.5 mol% BaTiO3) ceramics by templated grain growth (TGG) was developed. Molten salt synthesized (001) SrTiO3 platelets were oriented in an NBT matrix powder by tape casting. During heating, Na1/2Bi1/2TiO3-5.5 mol% BaTiO3 nucleated and grew on the surface of the SrTiO3 templates. A brick-like microstructure with 90% texture was obtained with a template particle at the center of each oriented grain. Preliminary electrical properties of textured Na1/2Bi1/2TiO3-5.5 mol% BaTiO3 ceramics are compared with the properties of randomly oriented ceramics with the same chemical composition.
