The aging response and creep of DRA composites

Abstract

The hardening rates of 6061/SiC/20w and 6061/Al2O2/15p are significantly higher than that of wrought 6061 Al. The whisker composite retains its tensile strength over a broad range of aging times (up to 500 hours). Under identical aging conditions, the tensile strength of the whisker composite is about 65% higher than that of the particulate composite and wrought aluminum. Likewise, the stiffness of the whisker composite is approximately 60% higher than that of the other two materials (which have similar stiffnesses). At 350°C, the whisker composite has about 55% higher strength than the particulate composite and the wrought aluminum, in comparison with a 111% advantage at room temperature. The whisker composite shows better resistance to creep than the particulate composite and wrought aluminum; the improvement is almost two orders of magnitude in terms of the steady-state creep rate.
