By understanding soil fundamentals, composters and organics recyclers can better understand the role that organic amendments play in healthy and productive soils. Biological organisms in soil give it life and energy and are responsible for driving most of the chemical reactions and transformations that occur in soil. Different types of organisms that live in soil are reviewed, considering their abundance, the types of functions they perform, and how they make their living. Some examples of how soil organisms interact with each other are outlined, as well as how soil management practices affect soil biology.
