Abstract

The need for primary prevention programs for overweight and obesity is discussed. To prevent weight problems in children, programs directed toward change in families' eating and activity patterns should be developed. Behavior modification strategies offer a powerful tool for implementing such programs. Guidelines are suggested for use by nutrition educators for a primary prevention approach to weight control that is applicable to the entire family.
