Abstract

Four exploratory surveys were conducted in 2003, 2008, 2013, and 2020 on the state of practice of requirements engineering. Surveys data obtained include characteristics of projects, organizations, practitioners, and requirements engineering practices. This paper creates a panoramic view of the current state of and changes to the landscape of requirements engineering industrial practices by analyzing the responses from the four surveys. With the continuous rise of Agile methods and their accompanying practices, this paper also examines how the current RE state of practice differs in Agile projects from the conventional Waterfall.
