As part of a larger effort to develop an independent system-level theory of interest groups, we explore the relationship between the system-level trait of interest group density and economic size. Models of state interest group density are developed and tested with data from the early 1980s. Based on these findings, the relationship between density and size described as negative, heteroskedastic, and curvilinear. Contrary to conventional wisdom, density of the interest group system does not increase with economic complexity and size.
