Abstract

Exciting research is emerging at the intersection of neuroscience and the social sciences examining the connection between education and cognitive development, including intelligence. First, neuroscience demonstrates that education influences brain development. Second, strong evidence suggests a causal relationship between education and the expression of intelligence through testable cognitive skills. Third, rapid growth in worldwide education levels likely caused the worldwide rise in IQ known as the Flynn effect. Finally, recent research is examining how these cognitive effects of schooling have positive impacts on society. Together, this evidence shows that education strongly influences intelligence, and this connection deserves further cross-disciplinary attention.
