Abstract
In this study, administration of hydrocortisone to fetal lambs was associated with an increase in lung volume, but alterations in fetal lung surfactant (as measured by alveolar stability, lung extract surface tensions and phosphatidylcholine concentrations) were not discerned. Our findings support recent rhesus monkey studies suggesting that the principal effect of glucocorticoids is upon nonsurfactant components of the lung.
