Abstract
The chapters in the book have collectively laid out the overall history, purpose, foundation, conceptual elements, and application of the integrated living laboratory framework (LLF). Taken as a whole, these chapters represent a specific methodology for the engineering design of cognitive systems within complex real-world environments where human agents must transact, conform, and yet adapt to changes given their abilities, resources, and provisions. Through the intervention of designs that have evolved through application of multiple sources of knowledge, humans can accomplish their intention and act upon their environment for both purpose and worth. As suggested in the introductory chapter, one of the themes of our book is to make life better.
