The Long View-Building Intergenerational Connections, Lessons Learned

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

This chapter delves into the evolution, challenges, and opportunities surrounding intergenerational programs, policies, and practices over the past ffty years. It refects the views of the authors and eleven intergenerational thought leaders and draws upon research in the feld. The chapter provides a historical perspective on intergenerational practice, policy, and research, discusses lessons learned across national borders, and identifes barriers to growth. It balances optimism with a realistic assessment of what it will take to more deeply embed an intergenerational lens into how we think, work, and learn. Acknowledging that a multilevel approach is needed to realize the full promise of intergenerational work, the authors highlight concrete strategies for changing mindsets, integrating an intergenerational lens into systems, and creating social structures that refect the opportunities presented by an age-diverse society.
