Abstract

The National Polar-orbiting Environmental System of Satellites (NPOESS) is the next generation of environmental monitoring. This system was originally slated to be a 6 vehicle, 9 sensor system with a test bed satellite. Due to its status as a DOD acquisition, NPOESS was subject to restructuring under the Nunn-McCurdy Act. NPOESS now consists of 3 satellites and all 9 sensors. Despite the restructuring, the increases in spatial, spectral, and temporal resolution provided by the NPOESS will significantly increase the ability of the remote sensing community to monitor the environment and provide timely, relevant support when responding to a natural disaster.
