title = "The progenitors of the brightest planetary nebulae",
abstract = "We discuss the possible progenitors of PNe which populate the top 0.5 mag of the [O III] λ5007 planetary nebula luminosity function. We show that the cores of these brightest PNe must be at least 0.6M ⊙ and that in ellipticals galaxies, only ∼ 10% of PNe evolve through this [O III]-bright phase. We argue that high-mass PN cores can be formed via Case A mass transfer and binary coalescence, and show that blue stragglers have the proper mass and number density to be the progenitors of these objects. We discuss the implications this mode of stellar evolution has for using PNe as probes of galactic evolution.",
