Abstract

Sunday, November 15, 2009 will be remembered as an epochal moment in the history of sports or at least in the history of North American fantasy sports leagues. The game's conclusion was notable for its relatively high level of strategic thinking: most head coaches in the NFL are notoriously conservative playcallers, and few would have gone the route chosen by Jets coach Rex Ryan - allowing an opponent to score in order to get the ball back with time enough for a final drive. The fact that Jones-Drew not only apologizes to his fans/owners but claims to have "had himself" in his own fantasy league makes the remark all the more piquant. ESPN television now includes, as part of its sports-media empire, statistics and "crawls" tailored specifically to fantasy leagues. Fantasy baseball leagues began when a group of men met at La Rotisserie Française restaurant in New York in 1980..
