Abstract
This explains the role that legislation has played historically as the foundation for rehabilitation and human services programs, services provided, funding streams, and subsequently client rights and freedoms. The laws explored will include the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), the Affordable Care Act (ACA), and the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), among others. These laws address employment, education, health, and safety rights of individuals from marginalized populations. Benefits, strengths, and weaknesses of these laws will be discussed. And ethical and professional responsibilities and considerations related to advocacy will be presented.
