Abstract

Executive functions serve an integral role in varied learning processes and outcomes. Yet, the study of the contributions of core executive functions to learners' effective integration and comprehension of multiple inputs reflects an underexplored area of inquiry. The primary aims of this chapter were to discuss and delineate the roles of executive functions in learners' integration of multiple representations and perspectives. After conceptualizing executive function, we propose key executive processes theoretically supported in the integration of multiple representations and texts. We then summarize critical task, text and source, and learner factors likely to impact learners' interactions with multiple inputs. We conclude the chapter by extending recommendations and considerations to augment the study of executive functions in the integration of multiple representations and perspectives.
