Abstract

Heat capacity measurements of multilayer methane film adsorbed on exfoliated graphite surfaces were made between 12 and 25 K. The heat capacity peak height and the heat associated with rotational transition were found to decrease as the film thickness was reduced. Our data suggest that the bulk-like rotational ordering transition is absent for an adsorbed film less than 3.6 ± 0.5 layers thick. The transition temperature was found to shift to a lower value as the film thickness was reduced.
