Abstract
Now that we have distilled the information about the Mhc restriction into a few paragraphs, we should begin asking all the 'Why' questions. Why are T cells Mhc-restricted in the firt place? Why are there so many blind spots in the syngeneically restricted and fewer in the allogeneically restricted T cell repertoires? Why is the class II context of recognition so remarkably stable? Why are some antigens recognized in the context of class I and others in the context of class II molecules? Unfortunately, no answers to these questions are available. Perhaps when we meet again in 10 years from now to celebrate Professor Hamburger's 75th birthday, we may be somewhat wiser in this respect.
