Abstract

Competitive Web site usability, which involves examining "competitor" Web sites during a usability study, can also be used when examining the usability of online catalogs. Catalogs are frequently a major problem for our users. This article examines the advantages and disadvantages of incorporating competitive usability into a usability study of the online public access catalog at the University of North Texas Libraries. Although there are some differences to account for when using competitive usability, overall it is an effective addition to a usability study of online catalogs.
