N2 - The advantages of analogue research are described and it is argued that research into fear (and comparable phenomena) has its own justification, over and above its clinical applicability. Research into the nature of fear contributes to, but transcends the analysis of therapy. The problem of generality is discussed and it is concluded that the nature and intensity of the target problem, not the clinical status of the subjects, are the critical variables in analogue research. Some guidelines for the conduct of analogue research are proposed.
