    Abstract

A theoretical comparison is presented of various optical modulation methods for subcarrier-multiplexed photonic systems with coherent detection (SCM/CD). Two modulation methods are discussed in detail: optical phase modulation and external intensity modulation using electrooptic modulators. Their performance in single- and multioctave modes of operation is evaluated. Some practical considerations are presented. Both modulation methods can be used in SCM/CD networks that can be implemented with existing technology.
