Abstract

The general nonlinear surface response for a centrosymmetric and isotropic medium with dispersive linear optical properties is considered. The analysis constitutes the nonlinear generalization of Mie scattering. Complex behavior in the nonlinear scattering process is observed, particularly for spheres of radii a exceeding the excitation wavelength. Sharply peaked angular distributions of the scattered SH radiation have been calculated and found to exhibit a pronounced sensitivity to the sphere radius a. The radiation patterns, even for relatively large spheres, are dominated by contribution from a small number of partial waves.
