Abstract

Despite serious potential consequences, the therapeutic approach to severe hypertriglyceridemia has changed little over the past several decades. This lack of progress might result from diversity of the underlying etiologies limiting the efficacy of any single drug target. Medications alone might not be effective at quickly achieving treatment goals in the setting of severe hypertriglyceridemia. Emphasis on preventing the entry of lipid into the plasma compartment, and preventing hypertriglyceridemia from triggering acute pancreatitis, are probably important future research directions.
