Abstract
The thermal behavior of the anti and syn isomers of 5,8-diethyl-7-hydroxy-6-dodecanone oxime (H2Ox), extracted from the commercial reagent, LIX63 (Henkel Corp.) has been studied. The heat treatment techniques used include refluxing, sublimation, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Analytical results derived from infrared, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR and mass spectra indicate that the aliphatic oxime undergoes thermal isomerization from the anti to the syn isomer. An isomerization mechanism is presented based on a nitroso-oxime tautomerism consistent with both ambient and elevated temperature isomer interconversion.
