Three Color Correction with Metasurface-backed Gradient-Index Lenses

Abstract

In practical multi-lens systems, improved optical performance is typically achieved through the use of many individual lenses. However, the introduction of too many elements negatively affects SWaP (size, weight, and power) considerations of the optical system. At the same time, broadband performance typically requires three or more lenses to reduce frequency-dependent (i.e., chromatic) aberrations. Nevertheless, we demonstrate here that by intelligently pairing inhomogeneous lenses with phase-gradient metasurfaces one can achieve broadband chromatic performance while greatly reducing system SWaP.
