Abstract

After the loss of 1.3 M soldiers in World War 1, and having suffered from 70 yr of declining population, France needed large scale immigration in the 1920s. A successful effort of business and government to recruit foreign manpower brought nearly 2 M foreigners into France during the 1920s. By 1931, immigrants comprised 11% of the industrial labour force. -Author
