A total of 1,320 on-site interviews were conducted with individuals visiting nine industrial heritage sites in southwestern Pennsylvania. Individuals were asked, “What influenced you to visit the site?” Based on content analysis of their answers, eight major reasons, including interest in the site, families and friends, recreation, promotional information, been-here-before, having some knowledge of the sites, road signs, and curiosity, were uncovered. Subsequent analyses of the reasons revealed that tourists' reasons for visiting industrial heritage sites differed based on travel experience, gender and time of travel. The implications of these results are discussed as strategies for service delivery.
