Abstract
Bacterial endophthalmitis is one of the most dreaded complications in ophthalmic surgery. In spite of many new antibiotics and delivery routes, the prognosis for significant visual recovery remains poor. According to several reported series, the most commonly encountered organism is Staphylococcus aureus, which is notorious, clinically, for developing resistance to the more commonly used antibiotic regiments. The purpose of our study was to determine the effectiveness of a new aminoglycoside antibiotic, tobramycin (Nebcin), in the treatment of experimentally induced S aureus endophthalmitis in an animal model.
