Abstract

The triaxial test was used to quantify the sample size effect on stress relaxation response of wheat en masse. Three cylindrical sample sizes (diameter × height) were studied: 36 mm × 76 mm, 70 mm × 140 mm and 102 mm × 203 mm. Three replications of each sample size for the following loading conditions and physical properties were studied: confining pressure (32 kPa), axial strain (2.5×10-3 mm/mm), initial bulk density (787 kg/m3) and moisture content (15% d.b.). The paired t-test showed no significant difference in the elastic moduli for the range of sample size studied. The stress relaxation data were modeled to within 5% using the generalized Maxwell model. The most repeatable load response with least data scatter was observed for the largest sample (102 mm × 203 mm). Elastic properties were more sensitive to sample size than the viscous properties.
