Abstract
The use of three-dimensional photonic crystals of nano-liquid crystals droplets in polymer matrix for the one-step holographic fabrication of polymeric and inorganic 3-D periodic structures was investigated. By employing a relatively short exposure, the resultant 3-D periodic structures of liquid crystals and optically cured polymer matrix were found to be possessing very good optical quality with low scattering loss and they exhibited high Bragg diffraction and selective angular reflection properties. It was observed that the liquid crystal droplet sizes were on the order of 10's nm to 100nm, which accounted for the transparency of these structures. The method eliminated the complexity and instability of a multiple beam configuration.
