Two-atom interaction in the dynamical operator treatment

Abstract

The decay rate of an excited atom in the presence of a ground state atom is calculated using a dynamical operator approach. It is found that the rate is dependent on the interatomic distance in a manner exactly paralleling classical interacting dipoles. The present treatment in terms of dipole fields, rather than the usual Schrödinger photon-exchange picture, however, removed the difficulty in interpreting the results.
