Abstract

Presented is a review of our recent results on the use of elastic bulk waves for the detection and characterization of bulk cracks. Described is the development of techniques and understanding of obtaining crack shape and orientation. Included in the discussion are data and calculations on the reflection of shear and longitudinal waves from the crack edge. A crack inversion technique is discussed based on the Achenbach Ray method to determine the size, shape, orientation, and plane of a flat crack. Examples of crack mapping are given for pulse-echo data. The host materials for the cracks ranged from Ti to Al alloys.
