Abstract

Pier scour is the erosion of a streambed in the vicinity of bridge pier foundations. In this paper, fuzzy regression is used to develop two pier scour models, one based on crisp laboratory data, and one based on field data. In either case, fuzzy regression provides models in which the regression coefficients are fuzzy parameters, thus producing fuzzy output. Field data is used to test and compare the equations. The models provide a range of scour estimates for any given set of input data, each with an associated degree of belief.
