The Recreational Experience Preference (REP) scales are one of the the managerial tools used to understand factors that motivate visitors and to examine differences in motivational aspects (Brown, Driver, & McConnell, 1978). This paper explores an application of the REP scales within a northern European context and the associated management implications. The purpose is to examine motivations of visitors to FNP using REP items from a North American context and to examine REPs potential for cross-cultural use. This is of special interest in northern Europe because of the cultural aspects of friluftsliv, which means free-air-life, and allemansrätten, every man’s right to move freely across private and public land holdings unique to Scandinvian countries. The study was conducted by Colorado State University in collaboration with Mid-Sweden University and the European Tourism Research Institute (Etour) to provide FNP managers with visitor information to aid decision making for a high quality visitor experience. The study was funded by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency.

N2 - This paper investigates the recreational experience preferences (REP) of visitors to Fulufjället National Park, Sweden. Data were derived from a pilot study conducted in the summer of 2005 by Colorado State University on behalf of the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency and the European Tourism Research Institute. A total of 107 Swedish and international visitors were surveyed on-site. Analysis included reliability and exploratory factor analyses to investigate the motivational aspects of visitors to Fulufjället National Park. Aims were to examine motivations of visitors in a Northern European national park using REP items from a North American context and to examine REP's potential for cross-cultural use. Four primary REP dimensions were identified including self-discovery, experience of places, seeking solitude and challenging self. Implications for management and the Scandinavian context are given along with the cultural context of allemansrätten and friluftsliv.
