Abstract
Through a combination of individual and group experiences, managers should acquire traditional management skills and soft management skills, both of which are required for the acquisition of strategic skills. In this paper, we develop and test a model for the acquisition of strategic management skills. We include both traditional and soft kills and consider both the individual and group experience as predictors. Overall, this research showed that soft skills and traditional management skills are complementary, and together they should lead to higher acquisition of strategic skills. Furthermore, these results imply that mastering the soft skills of management may enhance the mastery of traditional management skills. Consequently, it would seem that the recent emphasis being placed on soft skills in MBA and other management programs is well founded, and may, indeed, help enable managers to "understand the big picture".
