Abstract
Low-cost, light-weight, flat panel transducer arrays with a thin profile were prepared from miniature flextensional cymbal transducers and piezoelectric hollow ceramic spheres. Underwater calibration measurements indicated that higher receive sensitivity and transmitting response can be obtained from these arrays by changing dimensions and geometry of individual elements forming the array, and the electrical connection scheme. Arrays display directional sonar characteristics above certain frequencies, dependent on the element size. FEA analyses indicate that even higher performance can be obtained.
