Abstract
By installing Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS), the uninterrupted operation of motor drives which is important in many applications can be achieved. The present study considers several topologies that incorporate the uninterruptible power supply feature into the drive system itself, hence the need for a separate UPS is eliminated. The concept of Uninterruptible Motor Drives (UMD) is explored including the various power topologies for their implementations. This concept is demonstrated using a switched reluctance motor drive intended for appliances. The questions regarding the efficiency of operation of UMD are answered using experimental results from a laboratory prototype. Finally, in order to compare the cost involved in the implementation of UMD, VA ratings of the UMD vis-a-vis conventional drive systems are derived.
