Unique sulfur-resistance of mordenite-supported Pd catalyst for hydrogenation of naphthalene in the presence of sulfur

Abstract

A new concept on sulfur tolerance was proposed and the nature of sulfur-poisoning of noble metal supported zeolite catalysts for hydrogenation of aromatics was studied. Mordenite HM38-supported Pd catalyst was much more sulfur resistant than γAl2O3-supported Pd catalyst. The highly dispersed palladium on Mordenite support also favored the deep hydrogenation of naphthalene to decalin, which showed high sensitivity to sulfur poisoning than that of partial hydrogenation to naphthalene to tetralin. The results indicated importance of shape-selective sulfur resistance for zeolite-supported noble metal catalyst, and provided strong supporting evidences for the proposed new concept for the sulfur tolerant hydrogenation catalysts.
