Abstract

The investigation describes a petrographic classification of coke textures developed to evaluate the quality and behavior of metallurgical and laboratory cokes. Relationships between the petrographic composition of parent coal and carbon textures are correlated with the reactivity of coke in carbon dioxide. These relationships explain how solvent refined coal additions to coal during carbonization effect coke carbon textures and quality and define the mechanisms by which cokes react and degrade in CO//2-alkali atmospheres.
